Welcome

Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers on the planet. Only Spielberg has a more challenging, creative and interactive career where the satisfaction can equal that of one who truly knows that “you can make a difference”.

Since the mid Sixties, I have enjoyed learning and growing as a teacher.  My first position was as a Title One Reading Instructor in a small school in Texas.  The whopping salary of $200 a month sustained me and my three children who paid $20 a month for rent in a “haunted house.”  The students who taught me then still come to mind with such topics as the value of retention, gender bias, parent child relationships and the hope that one elementary teacher I observed can give to a child who has little else.  I must say that the people who served the hot lunch in that one building school (1st -12th grades) knew how to make cornbread.

From those beginnings to sharing teaching concepts, skills an strategies now at Sierra Nevada College, the adventure continues.  The future teachers I meet are mostly career changers or people who are seeking to make a contribution to their community.  With this focus, they are open to the engagement strategies that are a hallmark of an SNC education.  Their collective skill sets and wisdom make each semester as unique as a thumbprint.

If you are in our area, feel free to attend a class and “play” with us.
